Challenges

  • Industrial waste discharged without proper treatment can pollute water with hazardous chemicals. Industrial liquid waste contains chemicals harmful to human health and aquatic animals. Liquid waste discharged into rivers or seas can disrupt the biological balance of water, reducing the number of fish and aquatic animals available for consumption.

  • Many regions in Indonesia lack sufficient water quality monitoring networks, leading to a lack of accurate data regarding water quality in those areas. Additionally, accessibility of water quality data by the public remains a challenge that needs to be addressed..

Study Case

Improving River Water Quality Monitoring with WQMS in collaboration with the Public Works and Housing Department (PUPR) of Semarang City.

Two important rivers in Semarang, namely the Ngaglik River and the Blobok River, are the focus of Water Quality Monitoring System (WQMS) installation to monitor water quality in real-time. The Mertani team collaborated with the Public Works and Housing Department (PUPR) of Semarang City to install two units of WQMS with specifications for measuring various water quality parameters. After installation, the WQMS successfully provided real-time data that enabled rapid detection of significant changes in water quality that could endanger the environment and public health. Through training provided by the Mertani team, relevant parties became more capable in using and maintaining the WQMS. Thus, the implementation of WQMS has helped improve monitoring and maintain river water quality in Semarang, ensuring the sustainability of water resources, and protecting public health.
